Why Give?
In the United Methodist Church, giving is built upon our desire to meet the needs of God's family in our neighborhoods and around the world and our need to give in order to be spiritually healthy, complete children of God.
John Wesley urged those in connection with him to "Earn all you can and save all you can, so that you can give all you can." He modeled modest living and sacrificial giving. Wesley made sure those early classes of "methodists" took weekly offerings for outreach.
Today, we United Methodists join across our connected congregations to help all of God's children…whenever and wherever we can. Just as Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes when the crowd grew hungry. Through our congregations, we are the heart, spirit and hands of God's outreaching love.

Why is it always about money? What about time and service?
Jesus was both a leader AND a servant. He was always about loving people in a tangible way, and prayed "let Your Kingdom come ON EARTH as it is in heaven." Jesus cared about making positive change in the here and now... on earth. As we attempt to follow Jesus Christ, we too pray this prayer and offer ourselves, our service, and (sometimes the hardest sacrifice) our time as part of our daily practice as apprentices of Christ.
Money is one of many positive ways to enact change. Perhaps we can't fly to Africa tomorrow to construct a well and give a community clean drinking water, but there are groups there that can if we send them funds. However, someone within a mile of where you are sitting will go hungry today, and GUM Church sends people like you to work with local soup kitchens and food pantries. Jesus asks us to give our whole selves, not just our wallets.
GUM Church has many opportunities for YOU to get on-board with neighborhood and world changing efforts. Check out our "Volunteer Ops" page here on the website, visit the 10 thousand doors website of the UMC, or check out the volunteer tree at the rear of the sanctuary to find out how you can get involved today!
